a few bright ideas you've been sending us

  • Taking turns

To support turn taking teach children how to use a sand timer so that they can show they are asking for a turn and the child on the toy can see when their turn finishes. A large bright coloured 3 minute timer is excellent.

  • Do the angry stomp!

If your child or the person you are supporting is displaying aggressive behaviour, encourage them to engage in some intense physical activity instead (man, can I wash a floor when I'm angry!) Activities like doing the 'angry stomp', dancing hard, digging, walking briskly etc. Join in with them. You could likely both use the release!

  • Borrow equipment

If you need equipment ask your school/college or day centre if you can borrow equipment from them, rather than hiring it.
  • Break it down

When I teach a new task I use a method I was taught in the army to break it down into easy-to-grasp pieces. It's great for cooking and household chores in particular:

Explain: explain the task. Demonstrate: Show them how to do it. Imitate: They copy you. Practice: Supervise and provide support where necessary

  • Reach for the shades

A pair of polarised/UVA/UVB sunglasses can really help with indoor/outdoor photosensitivity. They may help seizures triggered by light, TV, candles, cameras, flourescent lights etc.
