Hi, I'm Arlene and I am an Occupational Therapist working with adults with learning disaibilities. I graduated about 15 years ago and have worked with people with learning disabilities ever since. I am passionate about improving the lives of individuals with a learning disability and ensuring they receive the care they need. My current role includes teaching and training support workers, liasing with family members, managing a busy team of OT's, consultancy, housing design and the odd bit of hands-on Occupational Therapy – the best part of my day!

  • Light box

We got our 13 year old son with SLD a light box to help with his disturbed sleep. It works by regulating his circadin rhythms. He has a dose of very bright light in the morning for 30 mins and is not allowed to snooze during the day. There has been a improvement in his sleeping patterns and moods so I would recommend it to other sleep deprived parents!

  • Digital photo frame

A digital photo frame is a great way of letting someone with physical and/or learning disabilities be able to go through their snaps.  My mother in law has very little fine motor skills and loves viewing her favourite old photos like this

  • Cheerio chewing!

We thread Cheerios onto a strawberry lace.  Works well for our chewer!
