Hi my name is Deb i have many years of experience professionally and personally of working with children and adults with disabilities (physical and learning) as well as complex needs and challenging behaviour. I also have a great deal of knowledge and first hand experience around dual sensory impairments due to current professional role and autism on a personal leave due to having an autistic sibling with learning disabilities. I am looking forwards to hearing everyone's tips on netbuddy and hopefully providing some useful tips myself.

a few bright ideas you've been sending us

  • Light box

We got our 13 year old son with SLD a light box to help with his disturbed sleep. It works by regulating his circadin rhythms. He has a dose of very bright light in the morning for 30 mins and is not allowed to snooze during the day. There has been a improvement in his sleeping patterns and moods so I would recommend it to other sleep deprived parents!

  • Digital photo frame

A digital photo frame is a great way of letting someone with physical and/or learning disabilities be able to go through their snaps.  My mother in law has very little fine motor skills and loves viewing her favourite old photos like this

  • Cheerio chewing!

We thread Cheerios onto a strawberry lace.  Works well for our chewer!
