Canny socks
Our daughter is on nasal canula oxygen. Putting socks on her hands prevents her from pulling the nasal canulae out so readily.
Video it!
Video is an invaluable tool. Our son has specific behaviours and signs of pain. We recorded this and showed to carers, school and medical staff. Most helpful and better than descriptions as they can clearly see what to look out for.
DIY barrier cream
If you need to soothe a sore bottom or rash, mix 1 part cod liver oil to 3 parts zinc cream and you now have a great cream which soothes and provides a barrier against further irritation. It works fantastically and is cheaper to make your own than buy the named-brand ones from the shops.
Immune system boost
Angela was susceptible to catching every little virus around as her immune system was poor and she was continuously ill. It was suggested that I put her on a daily dose of Vitamin C. I found Holland and Barratt supply Vitamin C in syrup form and we found this to be tremendously successful as have many of our friends.
Whooping Cough vaccine
The whooping cough vaccine can wear off in children around age 8 so they may need another. I don't want others to go through what I have as both mine got it and they were immunised; daughter was 7 and son 8.
Honey helps
Honey is a very good, natural way of helping to get rid of Staph infections. We put manuka honey in our creams and shower gels. You can also add it to bath water. We always use it to prevent infections when we are in hospital.
No touching
For anyone who has dressings, stomas etc and who is prone to fiddle and pick we used all in ones (babygro's/rompers, Fledglings make all sizes) and made access points where necessary using Velcro.
Keep it balanced
Beth had a stroke with weakness in the limbs of one side of the body. We involved both sides of the body equally to promote ‘whole body integration concepts’ e.g. put clothing on randomly on both sides, hold whichever hand is nearest when crossing a road (not just the unaffected side).
Oxygen therapy
Oxygen therapy - The pipes get condensation when they are too long and cold. Keep the pipes short and wrap in a towel in winter to keep them dry. Keep the pipes short and warm.
Sick towels
Keep a set of old towels just for your child in their room if they suffer from reflux/sickness. We call them "the sick towels" so we don't muddle them with the normal ones.
